ABSTRACT

There are many definitions of news. One which has rather wide acceptance is that news is timely information about an unusual event that interests people. Whatever definition may be preferred, it is certain that news on television gains greater audience appeal with the addition of color. The swing to color in television news started in the 1950s when the National Broadcasting Company began televising color and individual stations modified their equipment to run the network programs, both live and on film. The extensive use of color news film on the networks was not achieved until 1965. That was the year when the majority of the network programs were televised in color and when the consumer demand for color sets surged ahead of the supply. Manufacturers have greatly improved the quality of their films in recent years to meet the exacting requirements of newsfilm cameramen.
