ABSTRACT

In 2022, Turkey hosted the largest number of refugees in the world. Together with Iran, Colombia, Germany, and Pakistan, Turkey has received 40% of the world’s refugee population (UNHCR 2023). Despite the expectations of both the refugees and the receiving countries, such conditions as temporary protection, asylum procedures, or simply living in limbo are becoming more widespread. Moreover, the social networks and stabilizing professional groups that facilitate border crossings and movements report that the number of forced migrants who are traveling to Turkey every day is not decreasing but rather leveling off or even growing. What does this mean for the affected refugees? Why and how did they come to Turkey? And what are their socio-demographic characteristics, experiences, and aspirations?
