ABSTRACT

Indigenous Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are often the newest communities created in professional and scholarly associations. This chapter presents an overview of community histories belonging to the Native, Aboriginal, and Indigenous Coalition and Indigenous Student Affairs Network in College Student Educators International, the Indigenous Scholars Collective in Association for the Study of Higher Education, and the Indigenous Peoples Knowledge Community in Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. It discusses how these Indigenous SIGs navigate professional organization norms and their efforts to maintain Native values. The chapter also discusses the collective impacts of these specific SIGs on visibility and efforts to reshape the relationship between professional associations and Native peoples. It also presents recommendations for how organizations can keep pace with the growth and intellectual potential of Indigenous SIGs. Finally, we conclude with words of encouragement for current and future stewards of Indigenous SIGs.
