ABSTRACT

Beyond the Asterisk was meant to fill a gap in the literature on Native Americans in higher education and provide a much-needed resource on topics. Data on Indigenous students, faculty, and staff is key to knowing and understanding the role and the institutional context. This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores the ways institutions can and should increase data collection on Indigenous groups to ensure this data is meeting the needs of the communities and groups it represents. It offers important recommendations for disaggregating umbrella racial categories to better support Pacific Islander students. They encourage institutions to interrogate current data practices that mask community-specific characteristics and collect more specific data about Pacific Islander students with respect to ethnicity and/or islands of origin. The book focuses on Indigenous quantitative methodologies and shares research through Indigenous methodologies.
