ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a glimpse into the history of higher education for Indigenous men from precolonization until present day. While Indigenous men have historically been included in the overarching scholarship that focuses on Indigenous students in higher education, scholars still denote a critical gap within the emerging topic areas in the published literature that centers the experiences of Indigenous men. The Indigenous men are predominately individuals who self-identify as Indigenous men and are enrolled citizens of their respective Indigenous nations and/or may hold multiracial identities. The chapter explores the multiple roles and expectations associated with Indigenous men and masculinities in current world, followed by an overview of the current state of Indigenous men in the world of Higher Education. It outlines strengths, supports, and empowerment, which assisted Indigenous men in their journeys through higher education as shared in the research.
