ABSTRACT

The share of women in the police force in Bihar increased dramatically from just about 3.3 percent in 2015 to 24.3 percent in 2023. The change can be attributed to the state government’s policy of 35 percent reservation for women in the police force. This has been one of numerous policies adopted for the empowerment of women. While the quantitative growth of women in the police force is visible, an evaluation of the qualitative change that the policy is supposed to bring about is also necessary. This chapter examines the effect of this policy on their empowerment. The chapter concludes that although there has been a positive impact of the policy, institutional, attitudinal, and behavioural reforms are needed to attain more success.
