ABSTRACT

Field action projects (FAPs) initiated by Social Work Educational Institutions (SWEIs) are relevant to the socio-economic needs of a country and the training needs of students. Their objective is to provide opportunities to demonstrate specific professional services and to form a base for teaching and research. The concern for weaker and marginalized sections of society reflects the commitment to work with those suffering from the effects of poverty and socio-economic discrimination. The consciousness of social justice and development needs to be evident in FAPs working with various target groups in urban and rural communities. The relevance of FAPs is to offer creative solutions to problems rooted in the indigenous context. This chapter highlights the contribution of the social work profession through such projects with specific reference to gender, environment and sustainable development.
