ABSTRACT

The environment that we live in is a dynamic matrix that maintains equilibrium from stresses through homeostasis. Climate change has disturbed this equilibrium due to unprecedented rise in global temperature that coincides with the industrial revolution of the world. Women play a pivotal role in the action for mitigating climate change through their roles as reproductive females, mothers, homemakers, paid workers, conservationists, environmentalists, educators, researchers and others. Climate change can impact the reproductive potential of living beings – a prerequisite for maintaining life and biodiversity on earth. The negative impact of climate change on reproduction of plants, animals and humans can trigger species extinction, food insecurity and social unrest. The individual choices of women in each household can have significant contribution in saving energy and water while reducing chemical, textile and plastic wastes. Households can also act as carbon sinks through the kitchen garden and home gardens that are managed by women. These green spaces also modify the local soil properties, increase the biodiversity of the area and provide food security to the family. The fight against climate change activities can gain momentum through individual and collective contributions of women demanding governments to take better actions for mitigating climate change.
