ABSTRACT

The role of women is a key factor in the processes that are recognized as being agents of intermediation in the relationship between sustainable development and the environment, such as population growth, migration, family organization of labour, patterns of production and consumption and unequal distribution of economic, political and technological power. This chapter discusses the various ways women have participated actively in environmental protection and natural resource management in order to ensure sustainable use of environmental resources through eco-friendly or sustainable environmental practices. It makes an attempt to identify and analyse good environmental practices, followed by working women in Dindigul district. Sustainable development can only be achieved through long-term investments in economic, human and environmental capital. The critical roles of women, as resource managers, as community activists and as environmental advocates, must be recognized when strategies for the protection of the environment are being developed.
