ABSTRACT

Climate change is real and is manifesting itself in different ways and forms on a regular basis. The magnitude of complexities of climate disasters has increased in the forms of cyclones, floods in non-flood-prone areas, cloud bursts, forest droughts, heat waves and so on. These have direct implications on access to water, food and energy at the household level, underscoring the deplorable situation of the women, who continue with the conventional division of labour of care giving and unpaid household work.

Ensuring gender equality amid the complexities of climate change becomes all the more important as in the absence of it, almost half of the population stands to be on the losing side leaving them further vulnerable.

It is, therefore, important that as scholars, practitioners and policymakers, there is a need to understand the background, issues and problems, thereby, objectively analyzing them to chart the best ways forward. The focus of this chapter would be the development and nurturing of leadership qualities in women with the understanding that women’s capacity and strength would go a long way in addressing the challenge of climate change and to continue to the journey of sustainable development role.
