More generally, the tasks the German military were set did not arise in a predictable fashion. Bipolar competition complicated the reaction of the United States to decolonization, at times by aligning some independence movements with communism. The bipolarity of the Cold War era was always at least partially illusory, as any number of nations, headed by post-independence India, aimed at nonaligned status.
