The cars to be used in India were based on the 1979 model of the Suzuki Alto and were sold within an estimated price range of 45,000 to 50,000 initially, making it an achievable and palpable commodity for many. That summer, a few cars were shipped to India for marketing purposes and to also give people a 'sneak peek' before they booked it in advance. Driven by Japanese technicians, the cars covered at least 10,000 km, journeying to far-off places such as Delhi and Kolkata. The reason why it didn't stop running was the waterproof distributor used in all SMC vehicles. One of many other ways in which Maruti Udyog Ltd. In 1994, about forty years after the government policy aimed at stifling car use, the production of cars was finally delicensed, right on the heels of the government's liberalizing reforms in 1991.
