ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a heartfelt perspective from a parent raising a child with special needs, particularly focusing on autism. The chapter emphasizes the challenges faced by parents and highlights the need for understanding and compassion from teachers and therapists. The parent acknowledges the initial denial and subsequent stages of grief they experienced upon realizing their child’s atypical development. They express frustration and anger at societal reactions and lack of inclusivity, recounting instances where their child’s behavior led to judgment and exclusion. The parent also shares personal experiences of grief related to their child’s pain, lack of friendships, missed milestones, and future prospects. The chapter emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and accepting all emotions, including grief, and highlights the roller coaster nature of the grieving process. The parent ultimately finds meaning and purpose through advocacy and being part of a supportive community. The chapter concludes by advocating for compassion and empathy toward families navigating the complexities of raising a child with special needs.
