ABSTRACT

The chapter “Navigating Mistrust: Presume Competence” explores the importance of trust and understanding between parents and educators when working with children with special needs. The chapter begins with a personal anecdote about the author’s initial frustration and misunderstanding of a speech language pathologist’s use of a communication system called PECS for their child. Through their own experiences as both parents and teachers, the authors emphasize the need for presuming competence and positive intentions on the part of both parents and educators. They stress the importance of open communication, understanding each other’s perspectives, and being compassionate toward one another. The chapter also highlights the challenges parents may face due to past negative experiences and how educators can build trust by explaining their methods and listening to parents’ concerns. The authors emphasize the need for collaboration and the recognition of parents’ expertise in knowing their own children. Practical strategies such as using back-and-forth communication books are suggested to improve communication and understanding between parents and educators. Overall, the chapter encourages a partnership approach between parents and educators, fostering trust, empathy, and effective collaboration for the benefit of the child.
