ABSTRACT

In “Discovering a Disability: Sniffing Socks and an Autism Diagnosis,” the author narrates their journey as a parent grappling with the early signs of autism in their son, Braden, and the long, tumultuous road to a diagnosis. Living abroad with limited access to resources, the author’s family’s experiences were marked by confusion, isolation, and frustration due to Braden’s disruptive behaviors and the lack of understanding from the community. Upon returning to the U.S., they encountered the Child Find program, which marked a turning point in their journey. After a couple of inconclusive assessments, Braden was finally diagnosed with autism by an abrasive doctor at Children’s Hospital in Denver. The chapter offers a first-hand account of the arduous process of obtaining an autism diagnosis and underscores the significance of early intervention. It also emphasizes the importance of empathy and understanding from educators and therapists toward families navigating this challenging journey.
