ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author discusses the issue of “gatekeepers” in special needs diagnosis – qualified professionals whose approval is needed for insurance coverage. The scarcity of such professionals results in delays in evaluations and interventions. The issue is less severe but still present in public schools, where school professionals often have an overwhelming caseload. The chapter also defines qualities of a good diagnostician, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive evaluation, ensuring family understanding of the report, providing research-based recommendations, and being available for follow-ups. A stark difference in expectations between parents and diagnosticians during diagnosis presentations is also highlighted. The chapter underscores that parents, as the constant in their child’s life, must understand the diagnosis report to effectively advocate for their child’s needs.
