ABSTRACT

The chapter introduces prevalence rates and screening tools associated with various child psychopathologies. It states that one in six U.S. children has a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder. Highlighting the most common disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, specific learning disabilities, and intellectual disability, it outlines their respective prevalence rates. The chapter emphasizes the role of routine pediatric visits in early detection of disorders, particularly the usage of screening tools such as the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised with Follow up™ (MCHAT-R/F™). It also suggests screeners like Conners, BRIEF, CBCL, DIBELS, and DAYC-2 for other concerns. The ultimate aim is to enable parents, teachers, and therapists to better understand the diagnostic process and facilitate collaborative team efforts for the child’s well-being, a concept referred to as Collective Efficacy.
