ABSTRACT

The chapter “Discovering the Diagnostic Process in School Settings: Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)” offers an in-depth look at the MTSS framework, an approach for identifying and supporting students with learning and behavioral challenges. Originating from the foundations of Response to Intervention (RTI), MTSS is extended to address both academic and behavioral issues. It comprises three tiers of intervention, each catered to varying degrees of student need. Tier 1 represents universal support provided to all students. Tier 2 involves more specialized interventions for those not responding to Tier 1, and Tier 3 is the most intensive, individualized support level. This systematic method emphasizes early identification and intervention, reducing the need for special education placement. The chapter further highlights the resources available for implementing MTSS effectively in educational settings.
