ABSTRACT

The Eurovision Song Contest is ostensibly neutral and the organising organisation – the European Broadcasting Union – goes to great lengths to avoid any direct political references. Nonetheless, this contest has celebrated a particular interpretation of a Pax Europaea. It has provided a platform for promoting various causes – not least those concerning LGBTIQ+ rights in Europe and beyond. Moreover, the contest is a much-coveted platform which allows nation-states to showcase their talent. This chapter demonstrates that popular culture and politics cannot be divorced from one another.
