ABSTRACT
This work looks at the phenomenon of Maltese village band clubs. The author takes a historical approach that traces the band club’s development in tandem with the emergence of political parties – and political consciousness – in Malta. The study of the role of the band club is fascinating, and contrasts can be made with other local organisations the world over, including Yorkshire brass bands and Welsh choirs, which have both social and cultural functions and which were also political in different ways.
