ABSTRACT

This paper uses elements of the Jewish and Christian sacred scriptures to identify the rich insights they offer into the nature of politics and governance. Though these books are primarily analysed for their theological content, they also provide valuable insight into the emergence and consolidation of small kingdoms in antiquity. Moreover, they offer propositions about the theory and practice of politics and government. This dimension is relevant since the sacred scriptures seem to be cited more and more in supposedly liberal and secular societies.
