ABSTRACT

The BRICS nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) have become influential actors in global affairs, given their significant populations, vast landmasses, and rapidly growing economies. Understanding the role of BRICS nations in environmental cooperation is crucial as the world faces pressing challenges related to global sustainability, especially when BRICS is on a steep growth trajectory. This chapter assesses environmental cooperation pathways beyond the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) and explores the implications for global environmental sustainability. The chapter examines the historical context of BRICS and sustainable development, initiatives, policies, and frameworks they adopted, and the climate change challenges they face. The chapter analyses each BRICS nation's climate policies, commitments, and implementation progress. The findings show that BRICS nations have emerged as influential players in shaping global environmental governance and fostering sustainable development. The study recommends that BRICS nations have the potential to play a significant role in promoting global sustainability efforts. To maximise their impact, the study further recommends BRICS nations to strengthen collaboration, promote technology transfer, advocate for inclusive global governance, and develop a comprehensive roadmap outlining key strategies and actions post-COP26.
