ABSTRACT

In any television organization the Music Department must be one of the most interesting if only because of the variety of material and diversity of opinion which come within its bounds. Within the larger framework of B.B.C. Television as a whole, the Music Department has a dual function. The matter becomes even clearer if the people recall that basically television is—at least, in the author opinion—no more than an extension of the now familiar every-day radio. Accepting what has been set out in the previous paragraphs, it is obvious that among the many forms of entertainment civilized man has developed there are two which television by its very nature cannot ignore—ballet and opera. In the theatre opera has proved on the whole a more satisfactory subject for the outside broadcast camera than has ballet, largely because in most productions the full-stage picture is less vitally important in telling the story than is the individual character.
