ABSTRACT

In this chapter we examine organizational structures. We delve deeper into the concept of organizational structures as social technologies, and the idea that given the company’s environment and objectives social technologies (organizational structures) will be appropriate. The unfortunate reality is that many, if not most, organizations implemented their organizational structures during a different era, and they may no longer be appropriate to meet the current challenges we face in our organizations. In addition to exploring several different organizational structures, we apply the MAAD (Managing at a Distance) framework to the problems confronting managers and look to see how it may help to redirect their organizational strategies.
