ABSTRACT
Policy Addresses (PAs) are the governmental reports presented by the Macao SAR Government annually to summarize and publicize the government's work. It is an important document for conveying the government's voice. This chapter aims to investigate how the labelling of the government in the PAs with both verbal and non-verbal resources function in framing the image of the SAR Government in its first two decades. Drawing upon the insights of systemic functional grammar, a corpus-assisted multimodal analysis is performed to examine the verbal and visual presentation referring to the government itself through lexico-grammar and visual grammar, with a corpus built with the Chinese PAs of the first two decades of Macao SAR Government, their interlingual translation in English, and their intersemiotic translation in pictorial version. The results present the discursive construction in the labelling of the SAR Government in the PAs by revealing the framing process with the verbal resources in labelling in the PAs in Chinese, and how it is translated through the interlingual and intersemiotic translation processes. It is argued that translations, including interlingual and intersemiotic translations, play a role in the image framing process.
