ABSTRACT

This chapter will highlight the field's imperative to address credibility concerns within the context of a hollowing state by investigating best practices in ethical data storytelling. Understanding the impact of elements of data storytelling on credibility and trust is essential for governance networks and governments that rely on trust to maintain legitimacy. The chapter creates a framework for practicing ethical data storytelling when sharing information with citizens and other policy actors. This framework emphasizes the elements of participatory data storytelling: participation, data, narrative, and visuals. It also highlights the role of these elements within an evidence-based policy implementation process. Finally, the chapter will present guidelines for practice to establish and maintain credibility in data storytelling and future directions to expand or validate this framework.
