ABSTRACT

Drawing on psychoanalytic knowledge and experience as well as developmental science, a curriculum in infant parent mental health (IPMH) was created for lady health workers (LHWs) in Pakistan with the goal of building their capacity to support the infant-caregiver relationship. A randomized pilot trial was carried out to evaluate the impact of the training on LHWs’ knowledge of IPMH and their job satisfaction, as well as on maternal mental health and mother-infant interaction. This chapter presents a description of the curriculum, preliminary findings from the pilot trial, and feedback from the LHWs about how the training influenced their work with families.
