ABSTRACT

In the first chapter of our two joint book chapters, a brief overview of the context and the state of the art of the Multilevel Outcome Study of Psychoanalyses of Chronically Depressed Patients with Early Trauma (“MODE”) study is presented. The MODE is an international, multicentric randomized Outcome Study comparing high- and low-frequent psychoanalyses. Psychoanalytic, psychological, and neurobiological outcome measures are applied.

The main body of the joint chapters focuses on the clinical research of MODE. Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber discusses that first results of the study show that, unexpectedly, patients in the so-called emerging adulthood (usually between 20 and 30 years of age), who are suffering from an often almost complete standstill of their phase-specific developmental processes, respond particularly well to high-frequency psychoanalyses, which, however, are of a limited duration in terms of their length (in months and years). These observations will be presented for discussion based on a detailed case study.
