ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a theoretical model of sartorial coordination, derived from interdisciplinary research within the tension field of fashion, media, communication and network studies, dealing with the phenomenon of self-organization in social systems and exploring the spatiotemporal dynamics of persistence and innovation in the field of democratized postmodern sartorial fashions. The model aims to break stereotypes related to power structures within the fashion system by introducing a concept of analyzing sartorial networks as decentralized and distributed structures. It questions the notion of the alleged postmodern flood of trends, reinforced by the rise of digital media and hype culture, by strictly separating it from the flood of clothes with its economic, ethical and environmental implications, generated by the fashion industry.
