ABSTRACT

Environmental education has now become a public concern, but the educative role of the environment itself is seldom considered. Several kinds of elements, short of building a total environment, could be manipulated to increase the educative effectiveness of the city: play areas and other open spaces, schools or recreation centers, transportation systems, selected activities, for example, industrial, commercial, residential, or entertainment, and information systems. The first educative city project, the Park Square Information Center, was built in a gray area of Boston in the center of the hotel and transportation terminal district. The construction of the center was a learning event in itself, attracting considerable attention. It provided life on a street that had previously been devoted to traffic. If the educative city became too successful, many children, especially those who dislike school, would be more attracted to the city than to school.
