ABSTRACT

This chapter supports coaches working, and mostly volunteering, in grassroots football. It draws upon pragmatic work, which has been insightful in attempts to support coaches. This chapter translates complex, research-informed ideas regarding pedagogical approaches and positions them as close to the messy realities of the coaching context in grassroots football as possible. The psychological constructivist would only instruct, question or guide players learning of receiving the ball on the half turn by using verbal instruction, supporting the development of knowledge or offering expert demonstrations. The social constructivist would never provide critical feedback regarding defensive positioning and instead only rely on peer feedback rather than instruction. Grassroots coaches are the gatekeepers to lifelong participation within sport and more importantly physical activity; therefore, activities should initiate a desire to return and keep returning.
