ABSTRACT

The dynamic landscape of coaching requires thorough and adaptive planning in order to meet the demands of both an enjoyable and competitive environment. As research consistently shows, ‘the capacity to plan and rationalise through coaching practice is a determining factor of coaching expertise and effectiveness. This chapter offers practical solutions to help coaches improve their applied planning and practice design. It suggests that the constructivist approach of active experience and autonomy-supportive learning offers a unique foundation for coaches to improve their practice designs by challenging players and delivering creative returns. The chapter offers several practical session plans that cover a variety of technical, tactical and psychosocial development needs, designed as a resource for coaches to apply to their practice. The coach planning and reflective diamond diagram model is a framework that can be used to plan relevant activities in advance and reflect on those activities afterwards.
