ABSTRACT

This chapter defines decision making in a football context and how coaches can utilize this definition to develop an evidence-based approach of structuring their training sessions across the short term, mid-term, and the long term. Decision making is a risk-taking judgement, analysing the various opportunities presented to arrive at an effective decision. Making a decision is the process of identifying a problem, assessing various solutions to this problem, and then deciding which is the most appropriate solution in that moment to achieve a desired result. Through the bounded rationality model, it is clear that decisions must be made without an optimal understanding of all information related to the problem at hand. Compromises must be made based on the constraints of the situation and quality of the information available. A congruent and cohesive approach towards the development of the team's playing style and individual development requires deep consideration of all the factors within the context to create a successful coaching environment.
