ABSTRACT
A desert is rather an unusual environment for plant life. Moisture and mineral nutrients, important factors, are often very scarce, while the occurrence of temperatures above zero reaches maximum values. The soil cover frequently plays a decisive role in plant life, the top layers being either too light and mobile (sand desert), or compacted and saline, which is typical of arid deserts with clay soils or of gypsum deserts.
