ABSTRACT

Detailed knowledge of germinating ability of seeds (fruit) of native range improver plants is still lacking. As a rule, seed germinating ability under laboratory conditions exceeds that in the field, due to optimum temperature for the given species. On the other hand, not infrequently, seed germinating ability may be poor under laboratory conditions and much better in the field. This may happen in case of hard seed coat requiring varying temperatures for its destruction. Such fruit and seeds often germinate poorly under laboratory conditions and in the first year in the field, however they exhibit much better germinating ability the next season. These matters are dealt with in literature on some plant species (Suslova, 1935: Perskaya, 1955: Nechaeva et al., 1959: Pas-hkovsky, 1963; and others).
