ABSTRACT
Most governments take a certain degree of responsibility for the provision of health care services for the elderly and there is a prevalent view today that offering supportive care at home is preferable to uprooting old people and sending them into institutions. Local arrangements for the provision of care will depend on the policy of individual states or countries. The history of local institutions and patterns of care must therefore be understood when developing a geriatric service.
