ABSTRACT

Positive health outcomes are inextricably linked with sustainability. Current trajectories on climate change and biodiversity loss will have catastrophic consequences for the ecosystems that sustain health and, ultimately, life globally. Without healthy environmental systems, such as fresh water, clean air, and stable weather, it is simply not possible to protect human health. This chapter examines evidence of the interconnectedness between human and planetary health and discusses how the healthcare sector could positively respond. It explores opportunities for healthcare companies to enhance human health by protecting the environment by reducing carbon emissions, developing tangible solutions that make healthcare more sustainable and embracing innovation and technology through collaboration with start-ups. It also advocates for governments and the private sector to act with urgency to introduce policies to address the climate and health crises.
