ABSTRACT
Over the past 15 years there has been a growing body of literature on African women in wage labour. The overall concern of this literature, which is both descriptive and analytical, has been to show black women's disadvantage in the labour market, where they are commonly described as being 'at the bottom of the pile' (Cock 1980; Cock et al. 1983; Yawitch 1979).
