ABSTRACT

Because trade unions need to be associated programmatically and organizationally with other organizations struggling for the transformation of South African society, the relationship between trade unions and political parties is particularly significant for achieving socialism and democracy at the workplace. I call the strategy for doing this TWP (transformative worker participation). This chapter looks at the struggles of workers and their organizations in South Africa, at the politicization of workers through education and mobilization, and at trade union and worker attempts to transform certain of the state and managerial institutions of worker incorporation.
