ABSTRACT

This paper reports the completion of a social survey which was carried out for an ESRC supported project into, ‘Residential proximity, inter-generational relations and the support of the elderly’. It will concentrate on the findings which relate to residential mobility, residential separation and visiting. Some details will be reported of the frequency and distance of the residential moves undertaken by both the respondents and their children, which section will lead to an overview of the extent of the physical dispersion of parents and their children. Attention will then be focused on the relationships between physical separation and the structure of visiting patterns.
