ABSTRACT

Robert Butler’s term ‘ageism’ (Butler, 1969) has become all too familiar to us over the years – somewhat unfortunately, because as usually interpreted it refers exclusively to those prejudices held by the younger amongst us against the older. At least as important are the negative feelings held by the older against the younger, and against the youth culture in general. If indeed there is a valid generalisation which can be made about people over fifty, it is that virtually all of us detest the output of Radio 1!
