ABSTRACT
My paper will explore challenges and opportunities presented by an ageing society. 1 I want to stress that we live in a watershed era. How we handle it will shape lives for young and old in a new century. Building on work by my colleague George Maddox (1985), I shall discuss three revolutions:
– the demographic revolution;
– the revolution of knowledge about ageing;
– the revolution of possibilities and hope.
