ABSTRACT

A range of studies, from Townsend (1962) and Goffman (1961) to more recent research, have documented the disadvantageous effects of admission to residential care on elderly people’s autonomy and the widespread incidence of institutional dependence. There have also been numerous suggestions about how to improve residential life. However, research evidence, together with personal experience of working with CSS students, suggests that institutional dependence is not easily eradicated.
