ABSTRACT

As part of a DHSS funded study evaluating long-stay accommodation for elderly people (Bond, 1984), a survey of the services that already exist for the continuing care of elderly people has been undertaken. This survey includes a description of the dependency characteristics of elderly residents and patients in institutional care. The objectives were:

To describe the dependency characteristics of elderly occupants in long term care in the catchment area of three National Health Service experimental nursing homes and in three control areas in neighbouring health authorities.

To describe the residential accommodation and facilities available to residents and patients.
