ABSTRACT

While the natural process of ageing is associated with a decline in specific functional abilities, diminished ability need not lead to dependency if physical and social environments are matched for compatability with the individuals’ abilities and needs. Like most adults who are given adequate information, older people are quite capable of choosing environments for themselves which seem to satisfy their needs and resources. Even when the environment does not meet their needs most people have shown remarkable ability to adapt. Yet not everyone can choose his living circumstances; suitable alternatives may not be available. What can or should be done to assist such a person? What information is being used and who is using it in creating these environments?
