ABSTRACT
In recent years the development of social gerontology as a discipline has been rapid and there has also been a great deal of change within social work thinking and in the presentation of social care in Britain over the same period. Attempts to link these two fields of thinking have been disappointingly few and this perhaps reflects the status of social work with elderly people. A number of studies have clearly shown the unwillingness of many professional workers to become involved with the old.
