ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the founding vision of Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and its metamorphoses over the years. It underscores the contemporary challenges confronting IIMs given the changing landscape of higher education in the country. This chapter presents a brief history of institutional growth and development in the country and delineates the rationale behind the present collection of essays. It poses a set of questions that are important not only for a better understanding of the future of IIMs but also for higher education in general.
