ABSTRACT

This chapter evaluates the relevance, challenges and contradictions that have evolved in the management education landscape seen from the perspective of top-tier public management institutes in India, specifically the Indian Institutes of Management. The chapter discusses the above issues from the vantage viewpoint of the students and the recruiters whose interlinked interests, expectations and aspirations have not got due attention in the extant literature in India. The chapter argues that despite the public nature of the IIMs and their inability to cater to all sectors including public, government and non-government, these institutes have contributed significantly to the private sector and provided a platform for generations of young students to fulfil their aspirations. The chapter looks at the contemporary aspirations of Generation Z or millennials, the expectations of recruiters from students and management education and their implications for management schools in a fast-changing business landscape. The chapter also brings out the contradictions the schools have to deal with and puts up a fine balancing act to the satisfaction of these stakeholders.
