ABSTRACT
The life course perspective, which many view as a metatheory, integrates factors from many of the other theories of retirement. The concept of retirement has evolved dramatically in decades. For example, while the notion of “working in retirement” has been viewed as an oxymoron in the past, retirement is no longer tantamount to a lack of paid employment. Job crafting is a process that acknowledges the heavy work investments that individuals have made by organizing the job tasks and responsibilities in a manner that allows individuals to do what they do best every day. In fact, some individuals who make the transition from a hectic career job to bridge employment may even find they are able to be more focused without the competing demands that often come with full time positions. The primary antecedents and consequences of bridge employment are just starting to become better known.
