ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book draws on findings of desiguALdades.net and seeks to offer a systematic overview of advancements achieved within the network and to identify shortcomings in the results in order to open new research agendas. It argues that the dynamics of the realms are not solely the consequence of socioeconomic and sociopolitical structures of inequalities. The book shows that positions assumed by individuals within the global social structure are to a great extent determined by birth within a certain nation-state. It focuses on the global level, in order to understand the structuration of socioeconomic inequalities. The book explores some of the multiple meanings and effects of migration on social inequalities. Research on Latin America from a global and entangled perspective also calls attention to the environmental inequalities among world regions arising from global capitalism.
